Building a bee hotel is really easy and simple. You can build a basic one out of an old juice carton and a timber block in as little as 30 minutes, but it's not much harder to make a more substantial one that can be a place for more bees and other insects to rest. You can buy bee hotels, but because they are very easy to make yourself, it is well worth the effort and the sense of achievement you will get from doing it yourself. It can be a great idea for a first woodwork project.
You're probably wondering why it's worth the effort of making one, so let me explain. Bees are needed to pollinate flowers. Having some bees around your garden is necessary to make it look colourful and vibrant because plants cannot reproduce without their help. This means it really is a good idea to have a bee hotel near to a flowerbed so that bees spend more time pollinating your plants.
The type of bees that would stay in a bee hotel are solitary bees, rather than ones that live in hives and produce honey. On the downside, it means that you won't get any honey from a bee hotel, but the advantage is that these bees are very unlikely to sting because they aren't defending honey. Unfortunately, bee numbers are decreasing all around the world, so by making your own one you can make a small, but important difference.
Making a bee hotel can also be a fun thing to do with kids. It's a great way of getting them outside and enjoying the garden, which you'll probably agree is better for them than sitting indoors in front of a computer all day.
You can make a very basic one by simply filling a juice carton with a timber block and drilling some holes of different sizes into the wood for the bees to use. If you have more time on your hands, then it's worth making something a bit more substantial. Rather than a juice carton, start with a larger wooden box and fill it with some blocks of timber with holes drilled into them as with the smaller one, but also add some bamboo sticks. You can try including some foam with small holes drilled into the side (the bees will then be able to make them bigger if they want), and some pine cones held in with mesh wire.
Even the more substantial bee hotels can be made in no more than a few hours. They will look great in your garden and can be a great beginner's woodwork project before daring to take on something a little bit bigger.
