How to Stop Your Wood Warping

19 Jul. 2016

Timber is one of the world's most commonly used building materials for a variety of reasons. It has stood the test of time and provides any construction with a stunning, natural look. As well as looking fantastic, it also adds value to your property. Unfortunately, wooden installations can warp over the course of time, but keep reading and you'll learn how to prevent this from ruining your beautiful timber.

Stop Outdoor Warping
The average outdoor timber installation will cost thousands of dollars, so you need to look after your investment. A simple way to reduce the threat of warping is by sealing it once a year. This repels water and ensures your wood fares better than timber that's left exposed to the elements.

If the wood has already warped to a mild or moderate level, it can be repaired for a fraction of what you would pay to completely replace the timber. You can also have it stripped and sealed to give it a fresh look that lasts for years.

Stop Indoor Warping
While indoor wood is far less likely to warp and spilt than its outdoor equivalent, it can eventually develop problems. It's becoming increasingly common for older hardwood floors to be sealed with a wax finish that needs special treatment. An alternative is to cover the flooring with a coat of urethane; this provides ample protection and ensures the surface needs very little maintenance.

Simply put, indoor wood is not exposed to direct sunlight or rain, so it should never exhibit signs of severe warping. If it does, it's almost certainly a sign of moisture leaks or poor installation. This is potentially a serious problem that could cost thousands of dollars to fix if you wait too long. Badly warped wood indoors may also be a sign of mould or damaged plumbing.

When it comes to preventing warped wood, ask yourself some questions:

What type of timber is it?
What finish does it have?
What are the best techniques to preserve the wood?

When you find the right answers to these queries, you'll be able to keep your wood in fantastic shape whether it is located indoors or outdoors. The result will be timber that looks great for longer and you'll also save money by increasing the period of time between repairs and replacements. Take care of your timber and you'll be rewarded with years of service.
