How To Choose The Right Timber for The Job

21 Jul. 2015

When you are building a house or planning an interior project within your home, one of the most important materials you can use is timber. Not only should you be using timber for your roofing and ceiling joists, you should also consider using timber for your doors, windows and other more decorative areas in the house. Timber is a renewable resource that is durable and beautiful at the same time. You might be wondering if timber is up to the job when it comes to strength or maybe you want to know if the wood will stand the test of time. Of course it all depends on the type of job you expect to do, the look and finish you want and how much your budget is.

The first thing you should be aware of when choosing the right timber for the job, is the different types of timber available for the job. For instance, you won't use the same type of wood for a wall joist as you would for flooring or decking. Timber that will be hidden behind particle boards or beneath floorboards does not have to be finished to the same level as timber that is going to be used in areas where it is open to visual inspection.

Take a look online at similar types of projects to the one you are going to be undertaking. Look for common areas. Look at the type of wood they are using and the kind of fixings that you might need. This will give you a general idea of what to look for before you go to the store. Also, before you go to the store, make sure you have at least some rudimentary plans detailing the dimensions, location and use of your intended timber purchase.

You should also have an idea of the budget you are likely to have available to spend. Your budget should include the timber, any fixings and fixtures that you are going to need and paint or other preserving treatments. Are you going to need to hire a contractor to take on all or part of the job or will you be undertaking the whole thing yourself?

Find a store with staff that are willing to take the time to go over your plans with you. You can ask them where the timber comes from, how long it is likely to last, the types of treatment you will need to undertake and how often. Most timber sellers will be only too happy to share their knowledge with you in this regard.
