How To Remove Marks From Timber Floors

31 Jul. 2014

One of the most durable and beautiful surfaces for a home floor is timber. You can choose from a wide variety of styles of timber, colours, grains, and finishes. If you live in a cold climate, timber offers a warmer surface than tile or concrete. If you live in a warm climate, timber can compete with more traditional surfaces when it comes to keeping the heat down. It makes a very forgiving surface if you have young kids jumping and tumbling around. It's an all round winner and it's very easy to look after and maintain.

What happens if you get some marks that won't come out?

First of all, it depends what type of marks you have. Are they deep scratches or simple surface marks? Are they caused by friction or has something been spilled onto the timber, staining the wood? There are many products that are available fairly cheaply which will effectively deal with minor marking or staining. These products don't require that you buy or hire any specialised tools. You simply apply a dollop of the product, in most cases apply a lot of elbow grease and see if that works. At most, you'll be out of pocket ten or twenty dollars. Always try out your cleaner on an inconspicuous part of the floor first, just in case.

For staining, if you can't get the stain out, or if the stain has gone too deep, you might end up having to repaint, or restain that part of the floor. If you think you need a more drastic job done to get the floor looking new again, you should call in a professional for some advice. This should not cost you any money upfront. You'll only have to pay if you decide to take the professional on to do the work. They may be able to throw some light on a cheap and less drastic solution.

If you need to refinish the floor, this means a lot of work. You essentially have to sand the whole floor back to the bare boards. If you have a section that is badly stained you may even need to remove and replace that section of the floor completely.

There is no real way to keep a wooden floor in pristine condition. Not if you want to live your life like a normal person, and definitely not if you have young kids. The best way to look at a scratched up floor is like you would a weather beaten face, full of character and memories. Don't worry about the scratches. It still looks a hell of a lot better than concrete!
