Timber Flooring - Keeping it Looking as Good as New

30 Aug. 2013

We are sure that you all already know what a great feature timber flooring can be for any home, yet if it is not well maintained it can start to lose its shine over the years. Your timber flooring needs to be cared for and loved in order for it to keep hold of its beauty and quality. As we obviously have a big amount of love for timber, we have decided to put together a few tips that you can use to ensure that your timber flooring remains preserved and is always well maintained.

Mats, Cats, Pads and Kids
Mats and rugs are not there just to add to the beauty of your flooring but they are also there to help you protect it. These mats and rugs should be placed in areas that see a lot of traffic as well as being under wet areas of the home such as the sinks and bathtubs.

Always have a home rule that everybody should remove their shoes before entering, especially children that could have been running around in just about anything outside. Additionally, if you have pets, to avoid them scratching the timber flooring, have their claws cut back regularly.

It is not only pets that can scratch the surface of the timber but also any furniture that is placed upon it. Always try and use those protective pads that are available to place under the furniture at the places in which it makes contact with your wood flooring.

Sun, Moisture and Spills
It is not just anything on the inside of your home that can cause damage to your flooring. Direct sunlight through a window can fade the timber after a while so always be ready to close the shades. Additionally, you should make sure that your home is well ventilated otherwise excess moisture and damp can move in and cause timber movement.

Spills should be dealt with as quickly as possible too, as although your floors will be protected by some kind of treatment, slips or falls by people in the house can cause damage to the timber.

Cleaning the Timber Correctly
Timber floors are actually very simple to keep clean, but they should be cleaned properly. Use a vacuum cleaner or broom to sweep the floor on a regular basis and only use a micro-fibre brush when mopping. This should not be done with water though and by a specialist timber cleaner instead. Also, for keeping your timber flooring in prime condition, we highly recommend that you re-oil it at least once or preferably twice per year.

If you can keep up with these little pointers, then your timber flooring really should be looking as good as new for many years to come.
