How To Take Care Of Your Parquet Flooring

26 Apr. 2013

Parquet flooring is a particularly beautiful, traditional type of hardwood flooring that can last for decades if looked after properly. Found in traditional properties throughout the world, timber wood flooring is long-lasting, functional, and hard-wearing - not to mention very pretty. Looking after your floors means that they'll not only look beautiful, but they'll also stay beautiful for years to come. Maintenance is key, so take control of your home and ensure that your floor looks good for years to come by taking good care of it. Follow the tips below to learn how to take care of your parquet flooring.

Prevent Scratches
The number one problem that ruins the look of parquet flooring is scratches. Prevent scratches to ensure that the parquet flooring looks good for years to come - avoid wearing heeled shoes on the floor, especially high heels. Use slippers or go barefoot indoors, and use doormats at the entrance to the room to brush off any stones or outdoor debris that could ruin the appearance of the floor. It is much easier to prevent scratches than it is to fix them, so try to prevent them as much as you can.

Dust Regularly
Brush or vacuum the floors every couple of days to prevent a build up of dust. Excess dust and debris can cause scratches and marks, so cleaning regularly should help to avoid this. Don't mop a parquet floor - the excess moisture could sink into the wood and cause warping. Instead, use a specialist spray cleaner designed for use on hardwood floors to mop up spills when they occur, instead of cleaning all over the floor.

Use Specialist Cleaners
Certain flooring cleaners are only really suitable for use on vinyl or tiled floors, rather than hardwood flooring, so ask your flooring manufacturer to recommend a good specialist cleaner so that you can clean your floors without worrying about damage. You should also use very soft cloths to clean - steer clear of wire wool or scratchy sponges as these could cause further damage.

Be Careful
Always take care when using a room with parquet floor to ensure that you don't cause any scratches or gouges. Place felt pads underneath furniture and tables to prevent indentations, and when moving furniture, lift it instead of dragging to prevent any damage.
